Homeopathic Remedies

Dr Samuel Hahnemann developed homoeopathy over 200 years ago, working on the principle of ‘like cures like’. It is recognised by the conventional medical profession and widely used in humans, including members of the Royal Family in Britain. 

Some veterinarians have undertaken training; others disapprove of alternative methods of treatment, including homoeopathy. It is for you and your vet to decide on the best method of treating your cat.

Below is a list of common remedies appropriate to felines but much more detailed and useful information can be gained by purchasing one of the suggested titles at the bottom of the page. 

Aconite 30c or 200c

Particularly useful for psychological fear and shock following injury or trauma. Give one tablet immediately. Then give hourly for up to 4 hours. Use 200c for severe cases.

Arnica 30c or 200c

Should be given within two hours of psychological shock following injury or trauma. Give one tablet immediately. Then give hourly for up to 4 hours. Use 200c for severe cases. Arnica is one of the most commonly used homeopathic remedies. For bruising give 30c potency immediately and then hourly for 3 hours. In severe cases, give every 15 minutes until improvement. Can also be given the mother before and after birth in 200c potency. Give daily for 3 days before and 3 days after birthing. Can be used alone or alongside conventional treatments.

Arsen Alb 30c or 200c

Commonly used for fear, anxiety or exhaustion, or any signs of restlessness especially in the early hours, usually accompanied by thirst. Also used for dry coats in pets.

Arsenicum Alb 30c

For sudden tummy bugs and associated symptoms one pillule every 30 minutes for three hours. Seek veterinary advice if no improvement.   Also helpful for dry skin where one pillule is given four times daily.

Belladonna 30c or 200c

Commonly used for the sudden onset of high temperatures, sudden fear and aggression, ear problems where there is redness and heat, and for overheated teats in breeding animals.

Bryonia 30c or 200c

For immobility and pain or stiffness in joints. Symptoms are noticeably worse for movement and heat. May be helpful with bronchitis and pneumonia.

Calc Fluor 30c or 200c

Used for hard swellings such as in the mouth or foot. Administer 1 tablet, 3 times a day for one week.

Cat Combination Nosode

Made up with Rhinotracheitis, Calici Virus, Feline Peritonitis, Feline Leukaemia and Chlamydia nosodes. It is said these can be used alone but we use them alongside conventional vaccination. Can also be used if side effects of conventional vaccination are experienced and should be given alongside Thuja.

Caulophyllum 30c

Said to help the birth process. Speak to a homeopath at Ainsworth or Helios.

Echinacea 30c or 200c

Helps maintain a healthy immune system.

Euphrasia 15c

Derived from the plant eyebright. Primarily used for the eyes particularly useful when eyes are sticky and sore or accompanied by inflammation or discharge.
Give one pillule every hour for up to six hours, then reduce to one pillule four times daily until symptoms disappear.

Fragaria 3c

To soften, slow down and help prevent the build up of tartar on teeth. Encrusted teeth: one pillule a day for up to one month until tartar is reduced. As a preventative against new tartar build up: one pillule weekly.

Gelsemium 30c

For fear and fright and also very effective in reducing sex drive in males.
Give one pillule every hour for up to six hours, then reduce to one, 3 times per day for as long as is required.

Hepar Sulph 30c

 Particularly useful for ears when there is a discharge accompanied by a strong smell. Give one pillule every two hours for up to six hours, then reduce to one given four times per day for 7-10 days or until symptoms disappear. For persistent infections this treatment may be repeated monthly to keep the problem under control. 

Pulsatilla 15c

Helps during phantom pregnancy. Also to soothe the mouth, throat and gums. Give one pillule every two hours for the first 12 hours, then reduce to one, 4 times daily until symptoms reduce

Rhus Tox 30c or 200c

Used for any ‘looseness’ accompanied by a rotten smell, itchy skin problems, stiffness, joint and muscle pain which are worse for rest and improve after movement. Give one tablet three times daily, stop with improvement.

Sepia 30c or 200c

Use for splinters, foreign bodies and dirty wounds, abscesses, ear discharges, dry bowel movements and hardened teats in breeding animals. Can be used alone or alongside conventional treatments.

Urtica Urens 30c

Prepared from Nettle herb. Provides homeopathic first aid for nettle rash and insect bites. Also used to increase milk flow in lactating females. For burns or insect bites, give one pillule every 30 minutes for three hours or until relief is obtained. For other conditions give one pillule three times daily for up to one week

Urtica Urens 3c

Used to suppress milk production and so useful when weaning.
Give one pillule every 2 hours for the first 12 hours, and then reduce to one, three times daily until symptoms are relieved.
